HHGTTG on campus…

“They wanted copies of HHGTTG on campuses in the US, and they wanted people to read it and tell other people. Word of mouth is still the best tool for selling books.”Why free reading is important – Boing Boing

OK, I didn’t study in the US but…

I think that every campus bookshelf had a copy in the 90s, most of my copies “went missing” during that period; I must have purchased a news copy every year.

Snigger…

I’m sorry but he left with a massive amount of publicity and got to……Calais!

Telegraph Banned words…

Damn, if they make a paper that actually does this stuff; I might have to read it…

“U-turns are reversals, about-turns or rethinks. Avoid clichés, especially horrors like “a furious row erupted” and “massive heart attack”. “Brutal murder/rape” is a tautology: we should assume all such crimes are brutal.”

It’s where you put the sticker…

“FNAC in France (but same thing goes with others abroad) always put price stickers on the songs list, meaning it is impossible to see the full selection of songs.”

I thought that it was just me ranting about details like this; but no. There are other ranters out there!

Handling More Than 12 Hours on a Plane…

Ask The Readers: Handling More Than 12 Hours on a Plane?

My hot tips.

  • Take your watch off and don’t look at the time.
  • Loosen your shoe laces.
  • Sleep if you feel tired, eat if your hungry but don’t sleep because you feel you have to or eat because they’re serving food.
  • Take three different things to read; I always took a paper, a book and a magazine. You need the different tempos otherwise it gets boring.

Today’s quiz…

Who said this and what on earth was he talking about…

“This leads to AMAZING “lap feel.” The lap feel on this thing is off the charts.”

And the subject is!

More on how kids learn language…

More on how kids learn language (Geek News Central)

“Current research suggests that toddlers don’t learn language one word at a time, but instead learn in chunks by storing different useages of language and cross referencing them until they confirm the context.”

My children have always spoken French and English, something that is new to my experience, therefore I’ve taken special attention watching them learn language. The above quote matches my experience, the idea that children learn linearly one word at a time is nonsense.

Comics…

I remember being stuck in a hotel in Norway and watching a long documentary about comedy.

I don’t remember anything about the techniques and methods explained in the program. I was only struck by one thing…

All these very famous comics, John Cleese, Rowan Atkinson et al,  were all deadly serious about comedy. They analyzed every joke and worked so hard at it. All for something that seemed very natural on stage.

Steve Martin seems the same…

Google to “open” Facebook…

2008 is supposed to be the year that Google takes on Facebook; there is the hidden assumption behind this statement that it’s not taking on Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, and the whole mobile phone industry.

First, Open Social tries to move widgets and social network applications out from the individual network and onto the web.

Then the crystal ball watchers see that Gmail may offer Friend Updates. Gmail To Offer Friend Updates?

That’s a good start they’d then have a way of publishing status and a way of moving applications out of the silos, however the third leg of the stool is getting the information out of the various silos. And then Spokeo comes along…

Multitasking: Stephen Covey on Balancing Work and Life

Multitasking: Stephen Covey on Balancing Work and Life

To a chronic multitasker, everything is a task. Soon, the things in life that are really important to them are in the same list as everything else, and the only tasks that get done are the ones that have become urgent, but often aren’t very important.

This matches my experience 100% and is a trap that is far too easy to fall into.
