Earth images…

“A British inventor, Robert Harrison, managed to film pictures of earth by using a digital camera, loft insulation, a balloon and some duct tape.”

Fonera 2.0n Firmware Update…

“Though still in testing, we think you’ll very happy with the changes we’ve made so far.”

Fonera 2.0n Firmware Update fixes key bugs.

Sorry, no.

You’ve released an alpha version that may fix a large number of major bugs. This is over six months after I purchased your machine. You don’t even say sorry!

Too little, too late. My Fon remains off.

PS – Are we going to get an answer to these questions? http://www.wilkinson.fr/richard/?p=915

The most dangerous drug is…

This is a fantastic article; well worth the read.

“Its perhaps the biggest threat to the nations mental wellbeing, yet its freely available on every street – for pennies. The dealers claim it expands the mind and bolsters the intellect: users experience an initial rush of emotion often euphoria or rage, followed by what they believe is a state of enhanced awareness. Tragically this “awareness” is a delusion. As they grow increasingly detached from reality, heavy users often exhibit impaired decision-making abilities, becoming paranoid, agitated and quick to anger. In extreme cases theyve even been known to form mobs and attack people. Technically its called “a newspaper”.

Martin Varsavsky strikes again…

“We know their identity confirmed by payment details such as credit card or phone number. We comply with all requirements of the UK Telco Regulation and collaborate with authorities if requested to identify copyright infringement cases. Just like other hotspot operators.”

UK to forbid Open WiFi – FON can help.

Read that again. He’s just said that he’ll hand over the logs of your Fon to the government on request.

A few questions…

  • Under what conditions will you hand over my logs?
  • If I’m in a log when you hand it over the government. Will you tell me?
  • Do I have a right of appeal?
  • Will you hand over my credit card information?
  • Will you give over my logs to a foreign government?

My Fon just got placed in a box this afternoon. It’s still not stable. This news means that it’ll probably never leave the box again.

The future of books…

This is well worth a read…

“But really, what are we shedding tears over?

We’re losing the throwaway paperback.
The airport paperback.
The beachside paperback.

We’re losing the dregs of the publishing world: disposable books. The book printed without consideration of form or sustainability or longevity. The book produced to be consumed once and then tossed. The book you bin when you’re moving and you need to clean out the closet.

These are the first books to go. And I say it again, good riddance.”
