Le Web attracts Le Whinger – Thomas Crampton

To be honest; I think that Thomas is being generous. 

I think a large part of this is jealousy, and not jealousy of Loïc but of the sucess of Le Web.

In 2006 a lot of the British commenators who complained about Le Web said that next year they would organize a better conference in the UK. It must be said that those Whingers from 2006 have really shown Loïc up with their action and hard work.

• Overall he was impressive; he seemed to actually understand the subject and it was far more than just slogans.
• There are real projects underway. It was interesting that the initiatives that he talked about were all infrastructure based. The government has obviously decided that its role is infrastructure and its sticking to it.
• The digital blueprint for France was used as a model for the rest of Europe!!! Look what the GSM standard did for mobile in Europe.
• The crisis is a chance to revolutionize education (and again he talked about infrastructure).

It’s funny, Twitter is dominated by people without Wi-fi. I’ve been online all morning without issue; odd!!!

Le Web Begins – One Man and His Blog

…which also means I’m sitting near Adam but still don’t know what he looks like!

• It’s the end of the Age of Information!
• Today we’re good at managing information. We are?
• Today we reduce information to make is manageable.
• Today we have to throw out most of the information because we can’t manage it.
• On the web there is a level of detail built into the links but these links are the opposite of information!!!
• We’re good at managing crap! The problem will be the abundance of good information.
• Leaders lead by restricting information.
• Imposed artificial scarcity of information.
• We’ve taken a structural flaw in the way that we manage information and made it a virtue that we need strong leadership.
• Crowdsourcing Leadership
• Assumes that you have lots of good smart people.
• “Decision making is a failure of leadership”
• Realists would not have built the web or wikipedia. They’re not ambitious enough;
• “Leadership is a property of the network”.
• Obama is a strong traditional leader that understands the network.
• “Conversations and intimacy don’t scale”.
• Question: how would the Obama open network, work within the current framework of laws? Is this possible?
• The rules of the “social system” can have a massive effect on the results of the network and therefore democracy.
• We need less leaders and more love!

…Loïc seems obsessed about the language issue. We have the same interview each year!

What is interesing is that the Google guy is obsessed by the idea not the problems. I suppose that is what a few billion dollars in the bank does for you.
