Charles Bremner – Times Online – WBLG: Why France turns a blind eye on race
Charles Bremner often writes so well about my home country but every now and then he forgets to explain a key point about why something is the way that it is. Today’s blog entry simply states that France must (not should; but must) measure the ethnic origins of its population.
No where does he explain why they constitutional court made the ruling that it did in 1978.
In 1978 the Second World War was a lot more easily remembered than it is today. During the occupation of France the wonderfully detailed records of the origins of every person in the country were used to devastating effect in the deportations. Luckily France hasn’t forgotten that lesson (or the lesson of Rwanda twenty years later).
Without mentioning this simple fact, the story is distorted and the honorable reasons for the court ruling lost.
