Niall Ferguson…

I tried watching the documentary series called the Ascent of Money but gave up about half way through. I found Ferguson unconvincing in his analysis and bombastic in his presentation.

Since “everyone” was reading the book I assumed that I was an idiot. Then I see this and feel better.

“At The Atlantic, and with the searing headline “As a Harvard Alum, I Apologize,” James Fallows writes, “A tenured professor of history at my undergraduate alma mater has written a cover story for Daily Beast/Newsweek that is so careless and unconvincing that I wonder how he will presume to sit in judgment of the next set of student papers he has to grade.”

Dieppe…

“Big Commando raid on Dieppe today. Raid was still continuing this evening. Just conceivably the first step in an invasion, or a try-out for the first step, though I don’t think so. The warning that was broadcast to the French people that this was only a raid and they were not to join in would in that case be a bluff.”

Do you think that the troops pined down on the beach hear the message? Awful.

The raid was a blood bath…
