The truth…

I maybe odd but hasn’t he just shot himself and his profession here?Every article has to have a single point of view, and in this case it has to fit with the general preconception of the subject! He can’t find”news” as defined as something, he has to print a confirmation of what we already know. And the point of the press is?

“One of the good things about blogs is that they allow you to add nuance. In the news business, there is little space to tell a story. To earn the limited slot you usually have to stick with one angle. That’s a preface for expanding a little on the article we wrote in the newspaper today on France’s embrace of New World methods for selling its wine. The story fits into the classic category of “French tradition surrenders to superior Anglo-Saxon forces”. The enlightened reader smiles at another Gallic retreat in the face of globalisation but feels a twinge of regret that obstinate French excellence is again compromising with the modern world. The reality is a little more complicated.”Charles Bremner – Times Online – WBLG: France fights back with better wine

The market doesn’t always work…

As I watch in disbelief from a distance as the facade crumbles I keep on having the same thought whenever I read things like this…

Overlooked in the McCellan coverage (Scripting News)

Maybe the BBC isn’t that bad. At least they (used) take their role in society seriously.

So I think Sarkozy has to be careful what he wishes for.

Time to correct Arrington…

To anyone who lives in France this description of the APEC is interesting…

“Most English speakers won’t know much about France’s Apec, a non profit organization that offers job listings and job resources in France.”

Big Win For LinkedIn As They Hook Up With France’s Apec

APEC is a non-profit because it’s a government department. “Offers job listings” is also slightly wrong; if you’re recruiting in France you MUST register the opening with the APEC.

All the details aside, this is a massive deal for LinkedIn. Congratulations!

Cars and Cities…

Looking at these photos from the wonderful ParisAvant web site I can’t help feeling that we’ve ruined our cities with cars.

Howard Kunstler would be proud of me!

Yes, it’s true…

“In Paris you get 50 Mbps symmetrical for 30 EUR per month!”
Why the French are ahead in broadband; will free mobile calls for ads work | Rose Cantine

Actually it’s a bit more than the 50Mbps, mine’s running at in the early sixties and every few weeks it gets faster. There is 100Mbps in the building but I can’t be bothered going through the pain of changing.

Follow the link to the previous blog and there is a lovely comment about how sharing links means that they don’t need to dig the road up three times. Note that it’s more efficient and improves people’s lives but it cuts GDP by a third!

Get paid for writing rubbish…

“He is the man who nearly broke the bank … and who is fast becoming a hero to millions of his compatriots.”

French rally behind rogue trader as fraud scandal spreads | Business | The Observer

I had ten adults in my flat yesterday and we all discussed “the scandal”; not one person referred to anyone in the affair as a “hero”. This morning at work I see even less sign that he’s a hero!

Who makes this stuff up?

Equity Derivatives House of the Year award for 2008…

blog.pmarca.com: Great moments in journalism, Risk Magazine edition

“Risk Magazine — the finance industry magazine focused on risk management — presented, this very month, its Equity Derivatives House of the Year award for 2008 to… ta daa… Societe Generale.”

You can’t make things like this up.

I suppose that this the related to the curse of the Fortune cover. You know the one, boss appears on the cover of Fortune and a week later sales plummet.

It’s not just the toilets…

I left the UK 12 years ago and haven’t looked back. This rings so true…

Flushed with shame at Britain | Alice Miles – Times Online

In my experience whenever you point things like this out in the UK you get one of two responses…

– “Well, it would be worse in X country”

– “Well there is no other way of doing it”

The first response shows the slide towards the “you’re either with us or against us” nationalism of Fox News and the second shows a complete lack of fight or belief that they can or should push for change.

I have an old friend who often says”why don’t they just make it work?” about trains, the NHS and other problems. The toilets could be fixed if someone cared.

On a related point; I saw this yesterday…

“The unhappiest emigrants were in France, and the United States, with nearly 19 per cent and 14 per cent respectively disappointed with their new life.”

This is the unhappiest? I bet that more than 19% of people were unhappy with a move within the UK.
