It’s not just me…

Lying around the house there are two PCs, two Macs, three Wi-Fi radios, an AIrport Express, and the beloved OLPC. All this is all connected to the Orange Livebox although there is a Fon router plugged in as well.

If I turn it all on, what happens? Well, it crashes. The problem seems to be that the Airport Express confuses everything and before you know it the network is on it’s knees.

I didn’t even know that was possible. But then it seems that people far more intelligent than me have the same issues…

“I carefully restarted all the machines after carefully setting up the router — and then the moment of truth, boot up the MSI Wind. And the exact same thing happened. It took the router down! I don’t know how it’s even possible, but I repeated the drill and it did it again, and that was the end for me.”

Today the MSI Wind *really* went back (Scripting News)

As first steps go…

…this is massive.

Azure Services Platform – Overview

I don’t know when they started work but they’ve already the training kit, video, etc.

Too right…

How long is this going to last? Once he’s in office this sort of social change is going to be impossible to deliver on. I could be wrong but he’d have to perform a miracle.

“To live up to the ideal we just embraced, we have to do intentionally what Obama does by nature. He listens to those with whom he disagrees, but he responds only to the goodness expressed in even the most fear-driven of statements. Ignore the small, the petty, the self-involved, the defensive, and respond to the moments of goodness in all of us.”

They’re doing it differently this time…

There is no slideware, no smoke and no mirrors. They’ve built and launched an impressive service without trying to sell it first.

“… even though we knew about [most of what Microsoft announced], I don’t know if we thought they were this far along. Microsoft is executing”

Rough Type: Nicholas Carr’s Blog: Openness is not enough

Now if they deliver Windows 7 without promising to change the world first we’ll all know that they’ve changed their ways.

I think that Dave is missing the point…

…which is a rare thing.

“Wondering if all this is worth it. It must be, it seems, cause so many developers are deploying systems in EC2. How will it compare to what Microsoft announces next week? That’ll be interesting to see. I can’t get away to go to their conference in LA, but I’ll be watching the news as closely as I can.”

Windows on Amazon, Day 3 (Scripting News)

I think that the issue is that Dave is trying to migrate his Windows servers to the cloud rather than writing new applications for the cloud.

I’m having trouble seeing the difference between running a Windows server in a data centre and paying for one in Amazons data centre. I’d even be surprised if it’s less expensive.

Played with it very quickly and it’s better than the “real” version. By taking out the toys it makes for a better experience.

I’m sure that Daring Fireball would agree!!!

Masters of the Universe…

…loose to the garage mechanics.

This is a fantastic story; hats off to Porsche. However the Economist response shows everything that is wrong…

“The greatest damage is to the reputation of Germany’s capital markets, where regulators are now belatedly investigating what went on. Allowing acquirers to build large secret stakes in bid targets does nothing for confidence. Even Porsche may come to rue its coup. “They may struggle to sell 911s to hedge-fund managers for years and years to come,” says one investor.”

So if a hedge-fund looses money it’s bad for the economy. However, I’ve never seen the Economist says that if a car manufacturer goes bankrupt it’s bad for the economy. The hedge-fund made a bad bet; bad luck move on.

No expectations here then…

“It ends here, today.

I love this country.”

There is no way that Obama can solve 40 years of hurt but that is the expectation! Ouch!

Damn; another reason to spend money with Amazon…
